Medizinjournalist soll oberster US-Gesundheitsbeamter werden
Nach Informationen der Washington Times hat Barack Obama den Posten als Surgeon General, eine
Art oberster Amtsarzt, dem Medizinjournalisten Sanjay Gupta angeboten. Gupta ist derzeit Chef-Medizinkorrespondent bei CBS und CNN. Damit wäre Obamas Wahl wieder auf einen erfahrenen Clinton-Protégé gefallen, der Ende der 90er Jahre für Hillary Clinton als Redenschreiber und Berater tätig war. Während der Invasion im Irak hat er als "Embedded Correspondent" von einer Sanitätseinheit der U.S. Navy berichtet. Mit Erfolg. 2003 ist er vom "People-Magazine" zum "Sexiest Men Alive" erklärt worden und USA today nannte ihn eine Ikone der Pop-Kultur. Bekannt ist auch seine Auseinandersetzung mit Michael Moore, dem er vorwarf, für die Dokumentation "SiCKO" schlampig recherchiert und die Wahrheit zurecht gebogen zu haben. Moore beschuldigte seinerseits CNN und Gupta von der Pharmaindustrie abhängig zu sein, da bei den meisten Berichten Guptas und des Senders zu Medizinthemen Pharmaunternehmen als Sponsoren auftreten würden.
Peter Rost fragt, ob nach dieser Entscheidung es wahrscheinlicher wird, dass Obama einen ehemaligen Pharmamanager und Whistleblower zum Chef der Arzneimittelaufsichtsbehörde

Dr. Gupta presides over a small media empire that, in addition to his regular work on CNN, includes appearances on the “CBS Evening News” and columns in Time magazine. His first book, about the search for immortality, was published in 2007. He is paid for speaking engagements, a controversial practice for a journalist. The All American Talent and Celebrity Network lists his speaking fees as $30,001 to $50,000.

My husband has practiced Internal medicine for 30 years and I have practiced Internal medicine for 16 years.
We both voted for and support PE Obama in his desire to make our country better, however this choice is a bad and unfortunate one for the American people.
My husband and I recently attended one of our annual medical conventions on diabetes, insulin resistance and coronary artery disease. In attendance were physicians from every field: Endocrinology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, General Medicine, Gynecology, etc. When Dr.Gupta’s name was mentioned, the dislike for this doctor was well demonstrated by the multitude of doctors and other practitioners in attendance. And that was not the first time this has happened at a medical convention.
The displeasure stems from his television style of medicine including jumping on the bandwagon of unfounded study results without full understanding of the big picture, thereby causing panic where it has not been warranted. Sad, but true.
Unfortunately, PE. Obama’s team has pulled a “McCain”. His team failed big time to really vet Dr. Gupta and check out his pandering to Pharmaceutical companies and as aforementioned, jumping on the bandwagon of certain study results without really investigating them.
Unfortunately it appears PE Obama really has no clue who Dr. Gupta is or what he has done to not only discredit the medical community but also mislead the American people with his pandering to pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Gupta is neither an advocate for patients nor is he a supporter of his own medical community in trying to give doctors back control in practicing medicine instead of letting the pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies dictate care.
