A man who deputies said was being pulled over by authorities on suspicion of drunken driving rammed a Surry County sheriff's deputy before being shot, Surry County sheriff Graham Atkinson said.

Bowman was allegedly shot by deputies with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office following an early morning chase that initiated with Pilot Mountain Police Officer Mike Palmer, who observed Bowman’s car “driving erratically” on U.S. 52 north near the N.C. 268 interchange, Atkinson said late Tuesday morning.

“This just wasn’t like him (Bowman). He is a diabetic and the doctor had been changing his medications. He had recently put him on Chantix, to help him quit smoking. He also has emphysema. He doesn’t drink and this is totally out of character for him."
