Geschenke erhalten die Freundschaft
Einen Überblick über die Debatte in den USA zur Beziehung von Ärzten und Pharmakonzernen gibt Eric Campbell, Professor am Institut für Gesundheitspolitik der Harvard Medical School, in einem Artikel, der im New England Journal of Medicine erschienen ist. Der Hintergrund: Zwei US-Senatoren haben im September einen Gesetzentwurf eingebracht - Physician Payments Sunshine Act -, der alle Pharma- und Medizinprodukteunternehmen mit über $100 Millionen Jahresumsatz verpflichten soll, Zahlungen an Ärzte offenzulegen. Unabhängig von der Form, ob Vortragshonorare, Einladungen zu Tagungen oder der in den USA übliche Lunch, den der Pharmaaussendienst in die Praxis liefert.
Campbell schliesst mit einer Empfehlung, die man auch deutschen Ärzten ans Herz legen würde:
Individual physicians can take some steps to maximize the benefits for patients and minimize the risks associated with their own industry relationships. They can start by recognizing that such relationships are designed to influence prescribing behavior and by carefully considering the potential effects that their own associations may have on their patients. They can familiarize themselves with and adhere to the guidelines established by the institutions in which they practice and the professional associations to which they belong. And they can bear in mind that the costs of industry dinners, trips, and other incentives are passed along to their patients in the form of higher drug prices.
